The legislative body is contemplating a new criminal code that could become law later this month. This law could affect your holiday activities as it would outlaw unmarried couples living together and place a criminal penalty on having sex outside of marriage.

What this means?

Some vacation places might put you and your partner in an Indonesian slammer for anywhere between six months to a year. Then you won’t be able to enjoy having Sex in Bali as you will not get entertained by any hotels.

No room for the unmarried?

Unmarried tourists won’t even be allowed to get a hotel room unless they provide a marriage certificate to prove their relationship. Those who do not have proper documentation might risk falling foul of local law. Also, it will open tourists to harassment from corrupt local police while on holiday.

Apart from this, not only tourists but this law will also discriminate against Indonesia’s LGBTQi community. That is total nuts!

The primarily Muslim country has been in the process of upgrading its colonial-era criminal code since 1995 and this raft of proposals are part of the latest changes to criminal law being considered.

Further acts that could get you jailed for having Sex in Bali

  • Criminalizing sex work and making it an offence for anyone who is not a health professional or “competent volunteer” to discuss contraception and family planning.
  • Getting an abortion can also become near impossible.
  • Being part of an organization with such an ideology can get you 10 years in prison.

Human rights activists are petitioning the current administration led by President Joko Widodo to strike down some of the more drastic parts of the proposed legislation.

This law, if officially proposed, could really affect the tourism sector of the country. Representatives of various European countries as well as Australia have informed the Indonesian parliament that if these laws pass, the countries will have to issue update travel advisories to their citizens planning on visiting Indonesia.

“I am that person who dropped her B.Tech (really!) and chose to travel, specifically travel blogging. I’m Manmeet Kaur, a crazy, fun loving and adventurous person from Delhi. I knew I had an interest in writing since I was in school. I didn’t want to be an engineer, doctor or I would say a teacher. My plans were different. I wanted to travel which I guess no one,  specially girl had chosen to do in my family for a living. And like other human beings on this planet I have big dreams too. But my ultimate dream is to travel the world and share my experiences through writing and blogging.” 🙂
